A short video from Kunming, Yunnan Province, has touched millions of people online. In the video, an old woman falls on the street and hurts her nose. Several people walk past her, but one young man stops and helps. He is Jiang Minghao, a 22-year-old food delivery rider.
Jiang was on his way to deliver an order when he saw the woman lying on the road. He stopped and thought for a moment. He was afraid that she might say he had pushed her down. Still, he could not just leave. Later he told reporters that he felt bad in his heart, and that somebody had to do something.
He cancelled his order and took the woman to a hospital on his electric bike. The doctor found that her nose was broken and one of her ribs had a small crack. The woman was lucky, because she got help in time. At the hospital, a nurse asked her whether the young man had hit her. The woman answered at once that she had fallen down by herself and that he was a kind person.
The story did not end there. The woman’s family sent Jiang a flag with words of thanks. His company also cancelled the punishment for the late order and gave him a cash reward. In recent years, many people in China have worried about a hard question: when an old person falls, should we help? Some people are afraid of trouble. The Civil Code of China gives an answer. It says that people who give emergency help in good faith do not have to take responsibility if something goes wrong.
Jiang’s story shows why this rule matters. When good people are protected, more people will reach out. A small act of kindness can also warm a whole city.
