A university freshman in Guangdong Province has surprised his new classmates with an unusual story: days before he arrived on campus, he broke a national record on the running track.
Wen Shaohui, 19, is studying computer application technology at Guangzhou City Construction Vocational College. Just before registration, he won four gold medals at the 10th Guangdong Provincial Games for people with disabilities. In the 100-metre race he finished in 14.46 seconds, setting a new national record.
Because of the competition, he reached the campus two days later than everyone else. When the college learned why, it made special arrangements. A staff member was assigned to help him, and his registration was completed in advance.
Wen lost his left leg in an accident six years ago, when he was only thirteen. For a time he shut himself away and lost hope. It was his family and teachers who encouraged him to try running again. Once he started, he did not stop.
I do not feel that I am different from anyone else, he said. What other people can do, I can do. And what others cannot do, I will work hard to do.
His new goals are clear. He wants to do well in his major, keep training hard, and reach a higher level of competition. Top three at the Asian Games, he said, is what he is aiming for next.
