Two schoolboys in Foshan, Guangdong Province, have been praised for a quiet act of kindness that they tried hard to keep secret.
The story began on the afternoon of August 3. Wang Xiaohong was running in Wenhua Park when she fell and badly dislocated her left elbow. She lay on the track, unable to move. Two sixth-grade boys, Wen Jinrui and Li Yuqi, were playing football nearby and ran over to see what had happened.
Someone had already called for an ambulance. The boys, who often played in the park, knew that the nearest hospital was just across the road. They ran there and asked the doctor on duty to come and help.
By the time they came back with a doctor, the sky had turned grey and rain had begun to fall. Worried that the injured woman would get soaked and make her injury worse, the two boys ran to a nearby bookshop and pooled their pocket money to buy an umbrella. It cost them 48 yuan, close to a whole month of their own pocket money.
The rain poured down as soon as the umbrella arrived. After Wang was carried into the ambulance, the boys ran home in the rain, completely wet.
They thought what they had done was nothing special. When adults at the scene asked for their names, they waved and said nothing. A week later, when their principal read a letter of thanks to the whole school and asked the two boys to come forward, they still said nothing. In the end, their parents told the head teacher, and the school worked out who they were.
Wang typed that letter with one hand while her arm was still healing. She gave each boy a book, and wrote inside: Thank you for blocking pain and unease for a stranger, with your running figures and your open umbrella.
