A delivery rider in Ningbo, Zhejiang Province, has become a local hero after he stopped his motorbike during a busy shift and helped save a woman on a bridge.
It happened at about six in the evening on September 7. Two girls shouted that someone was about to jump from a bridge over a river. Zhao Pin, a 35-year-old delivery station manager, had just finished a delivery and was passing by. He heard the shouts, parked at once and ran towards the bridge.
What he saw made his heart sink. A woman had climbed over the outer railing. She was holding it with both hands, her feet balanced on a ledge only twenty or thirty centimetres wide. One wrong move and she would fall into the river.
Zhao called the police while he climbed over the inner railing to reach her. He spoke to her softly, but she was too upset to listen, crying and telling him to leave her alone. Zhao held on and refused to let go.
Three passers-by soon joined him. The four of them worked together, holding the woman by both arms. At seven minutes past six they lifted her slowly from the edge of the bridge to a safe platform below.
Because that platform was about two metres lower than the road, they could not carry her back up right away. So they stayed close, kept comforting her, and waited for professional help. Police officers and firefighters arrived soon after and moved her to safety.
Zhao left quietly once he knew she was all right and her family had taken over. From the shout to the rescue, less than ten minutes had passed.
It was not the first time he had helped a stranger. Earlier this year he called for help when he found an elderly person lying by the road in thin clothes. For him, it was simple. We are riders. We are on the road every day. If someone needs help, of course we stop.
